OpenSSH supports version 2 because version 1 has become obsolete and has certain vulnerabilities also.

SSH 2.0 does the following :-

Encrypts password and other session data, protecting user from snoopers.
Tunnels other network connections, including those from X windows system clients.
Offers clients for nearly any operating system.
Uses keys for host authentication.
